Kachwenyanja — Muzee of Kanazi
Kachwenyanja — Muzee of Kanazi

In Muzee's performance, the epic ballad of Kachwenyanja is about love, death, and the power and transcendence of poetry. Exploding outward from a loving pair -- a royal warrior and his new bride -- the constellation of themes takes shape within a particular Haya cultural world of romantic attachment, military action, and poetic genres. These cultural forms, in turn, are enacted in a Haya heroic age that was shaped by conflict between two dominant social institutions -- patrilineal clans and a centralized kingship. Depicted words and deeds thus arise from universal human passions and from ethical values associated with these historical institutions, and with opposition to them.

This was the very first song Muzee chose to sing in the evening concert he gave at the large thatch-walled house (musonge) of Dionies Lutabanzibwa on August 21, 1969, in Katome village, Kihanja, in Kagera Region of Tanzania.
